Welcome to the Newto News for December of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Wilmington, North Carolina was founded in 1739 and quickly became a thriving port city due to its strategic location along the Cape Fear River. It played a crucial role in the American Revolution as a major supply center for the Continental Army. During the Civil War, Wilmington was a key Confederate port that was heavily blockaded by Union forces, leading to severe economic hardships for the city. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Wilmington experienced a boom in industry, with the proliferation of lumber mills, shipbuilding, and the establishment of a vibrant downtown area. However, racial tensions simmered beneath the surface, culminating in the infamous Wilmington insurrection of 1898, in which a mob of white supremacists overthrew the biracial local government. Today, Wilmington is a popular tourist destination known for its historic downtown area, beautiful beaches, and vibrant arts and culture scene. It continues to thrive as a major port city and a hub for film production, earning the nickname “Hollywood of the East Coast.”
