Welcome to the Newto News for December of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Located in the northern part of Delaware, Wilmington has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1638 by Swedish settlers. Initially known as “Willington” in honor of Thomas Willing, a friend of the area’s founder, the city quickly became an important center of trade and commerce due to its strategic location along the Christina River. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Wilmington continued to grow as a bustling industrial city, with thriving shipbuilding and textile industries. The city also played a key role in the abolitionist movement, as a stop on the Underground Railroad for escaped slaves seeking freedom in the North. In the 20th century, Wilmington saw a shift towards becoming a financial hub, with the presence of major banks and corporations in the downtown area. Today, the city is known for its vibrant cultural scene, historic neighborhoods, and diverse population, making it a unique and dynamic place to live and visit.
