Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was originally inhabited by the indigenous Muskogean-speaking peoples, including the Choctaw and Creek tribes. The area was first visited by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in the 16th century. In 1817, Tuscaloosa was chosen as the site for the new state capital of Alabama, but the capital was later moved to Montgomery in 1846. Throughout the 19th century, Tuscaloosa thrived as a center for agriculture, industry, and education. It became known for its cotton production and as a hub for the transportation of goods along the Black Warrior River. The city also became a major center for education with the founding of the University of Alabama in 1831. During the Civil War, Tuscaloosa played a strategic role as a supplier of munitions and supplies to the Confederate Army. In the 20th century, Tuscaloosa continued to grow and diversify its economy, becoming known for its automotive manufacturing, healthcare, and technology industries. Today, Tuscaloosa is a vibrant city with a rich history and a strong sense of community.
