Toledo, Ohio was founded in 1833 on the western shore of the Maumee River by a group of settlers led by Job Phelps. The city quickly grew as a transportation hub, thanks to its strategic location on the Great Lakes and major railroads. By the late 19th century, Toledo had become a major industrial center, with industries such as glass production, shipping, and automobile manufacturing driving its economy. In the early 20th century, Toledo gained national attention during the Labor strikes of 1934, when a violent clash between striking workers and the National Guard resulted in several deaths.
