Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Tacoma, Washington was founded in 1872 as a bustling seaport city on the Puget Sound. Originally inhabited by the Puyallup Native American tribe, the area was quickly settled by European pioneers drawn to its natural beauty and abundant resources. The city’s growth was fueled by the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the 1880s, connecting Tacoma to markets across the country and solidifying its status as a major transportation hub. Tacoma’s economy thrived with the development of industries such as lumber, fishing, and shipping, cementing its reputation as the “City of Destiny.” The city faced challenges during the Great Depression and World War II, but emerged stronger than ever in the post-war years with the growth of aerospace and technology sectors. Today, Tacoma is a diverse and vibrant city with a dynamic arts and cultural scene, renowned museums, and a strong emphasis on sustainability and outdoor recreation. Its historic architecture, picturesque waterfront, and stunning mountain views continue to draw visitors from around the world.
