Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Stockton, California was founded in 1849 by Captain Charles Maria Weber, a German immigrant who saw the potential for a thriving city along the San Joaquin River. Originally named Tuleburg, Stockton quickly grew into a bustling hub for gold miners during the California Gold Rush. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Stockton became a major transportation center due to its location on the river and the construction of the Stockton Deepwater Channel, which allowed for larger ships to access the port. The city also developed a strong agricultural industry, with crops like asparagus, cherries, and tomatoes becoming mainstays of the local economy. Today, Stockton is known for its diverse population, vibrant arts scene, and historic downtown waterfront. Despite facing economic challenges in recent years, the city continues to grow and thrive, with a revitalized downtown area and a focus on sustainability and community development.
