Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Springfield, Illinois was founded in 1819 by European-American settlers on land originally inhabited by Native American tribes, specifically the Kickapoo and Pottawatomie. The city quickly grew as a hub for agriculture and trade, attracting settlers from all over the country. In the mid-19th century, Springfield became the official capital of Illinois, a position it still holds today. During this time, the city was also the site of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates, where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas discussed the issue of slavery in America. Springfield’s economy continued to expand in the early 20th century with the growth of industries such as furniture manufacturing and coal mining. The city also played a significant role in World War II, serving as a base for the production of military equipment. Today, Springfield is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and vibrant economy. It continues to attract visitors from around the world who come to explore its historic sites and enjoy its modern amenities.
