Springfield, Illinois, located in the central part of the state, has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. Originally settled by European-American traders and farmers in the early 1820s, the city quickly grew into a vibrant community with the construction of the Illinois State Capitol building in 1839. Springfield became the capital of Illinois in 1837, replacing Vandalia, and has remained the seat of state government ever since. The city played a significant role in the political career of Abraham Lincoln, who lived and practiced law in Springfield before becoming the 16th President of the United States. Throughout the years, Springfield has continued to grow and develop, becoming a center for education, healthcare, and cultural attractions. Today, the city is known for its historic sites, including the Lincoln Home National Historic Site and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, which celebrate the life and legacy of one of America’s most beloved presidents.
