Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Savannah, Georgia was founded in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe and a group of colonists from England. The city was established as the first capital of the Georgia Colony and quickly became a bustling port city due to its strategic location on the Savannah River. Throughout its history, Savannah played a significant role in the American Revolution, serving as a key center for British forces. The city was also a major trading hub for cotton and other agricultural goods during the antebellum period. During the Civil War, Savannah was captured by Union forces in 1864 during General William Tecumseh Sherman’s March to the Sea. Despite this, the city managed to avoid destruction thanks to the surrender of Confederate forces and the controversial decision by Sherman to spare the city. Today, Savannah is known for its historic architecture, beautiful parks, and vibrant arts scene, making it a popular tourist destination in the South.
