Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

San Diego, California has a rich and diverse history that dates back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, who were expert hunters and gatherers. In 1542, Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to set foot in the region, claiming it for Spain. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, San Diego served as a Spanish and Mexican outpost, playing a key role in the development of California. In 1850, San Diego officially became a part of the United States as part of the California statehood. The city experienced rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily due to its deep-water port and proximity to Mexico. It became a major hub for trade and the military, particularly during World War II. Today, San Diego is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and thriving economy. It has become a popular tourist destination and a center for innovation in industries such as biotechnology and telecommunications.
