Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Salem, Oregon, named after the biblical city of peace, was founded in 1842 by a group of Methodist missionaries seeking to establish a farming community in the Oregon Territory. Situated in the lush Willamette Valley, Salem quickly grew into a bustling center of agriculture and trade. In 1851, Salem was named the capital of the Oregon Territory, a title it has held ever since. The city played a pivotal role in the formation of the state of Oregon in 1859, serving as the location of the state’s first constitutional convention. Throughout its history, Salem has been a hub of political and cultural activity in Oregon. The city saw rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the construction of the Oregon State Capitol building in 1938 marking a milestone in its development. Today, Salem continues to thrive as a diverse and vibrant city, with a strong sense of community and a rich cultural heritage. Its historic downtown area boasts numerous museums, galleries, and restaurants, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
