Originally established as the town of Big Lick, it quickly grew into a bustling hub for transportation and commerce due to its location along the Norfolk and Western Railway. During the Civil War, Roanoke played a strategic role as a key transportation center for the Confederate States. The city continued to thrive post-war, with the railroad industry driving economic growth and attracting new residents.
