Welcome to the Newto News for December of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Reno, Nevada was established in the mid-1800s as a trading post along the Truckee River. Originally known as Lake’s Crossing, the town quickly grew as a hub for travelers heading to California during the Gold Rush. In 1868, the town was officially renamed Reno in honor of Civil War officer and politician Jesse Reno. By the late 19th century, Reno had become a popular destination for gambling and entertainment, earning it the nickname “The Biggest Little City in the World.” The legalization of gambling in 1931 further solidified Reno’s reputation as a hotspot for tourists seeking excitement and adventure. Throughout the 20th century, Reno continued to thrive as a center for tourism and gaming, attracting visitors from around the world. Today, the city is known for its vibrant nightlife, cultural attractions, and stunning natural surroundings, making it a popular destination for both residents and tourists alike.
