Provo, Utah was founded in 1849 by Mormon settlers seeking a new home in the western United States. The city was named after Etienne Provost, a French-Canadian fur trapper who explored the area in the early 1800s. Provo quickly became a center for agriculture and industry, with the construction of gristmills and sawmills along the Provo River. In the late 19th century, Provo experienced a period of rapid growth as the arrival of the railroad spurred development in the region. The city became known for its thriving arts and culture scene, with the establishment of Brigham Young University in 1875 and the Utah State Hospital in 1885. Throughout the 20th century, Provo continued to expand, becoming a hub for technology and education. The city is now home to several major tech companies and is known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, including skiing, hiking, and rock climbing in the nearby Wasatch Mountains. Today, Provo remains a vibrant and diverse community with a rich history and a promising future.
