Portland, Oregon was originally inhabited by the Multnomah people for thousands of years before being settled by European Americans in the early 19th century. In 1843, an Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove flipped a coin to decide the city’s name, with Pettygrove winning the toss and choosing Portland. Throughout the 19th century, Portland quickly grew as a major port city in the Pacific Northwest, due to its convenient location along the Willamette and Columbia rivers. The city became a hub for timber, fishing, and shipping industries, leading to a population boom during the Gold Rush era. In the early 20th century, Portland continued to prosper as a major industrial city, with the establishment of major companies such as U.S. Bank and the Portland General Electric Company. However, the city also faced social issues such as labor strikes and racial segregation. In the latter half of the 20th century, Portland underwent a cultural renaissance, becoming known for its vibrant arts scene, environmental consciousness, and progressive social policies. Today, Portland is a thriving metropolitan city known for its quirky culture, bustling food scene, and scenic outdoor attractions.
