Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Portland, Oregon was founded in 1845 by pioneers Asa Lovejoy and Francis W. Pettygrove, who famously flipped a coin to decide the city’s name, with Pettygrove winning the honor of naming the city after his hometown of Portland, Maine. Located on the Willamette River in the Pacific Northwest, Portland quickly grew into a bustling trading hub due to its strategic location and access to transportation via river and later railroad. In the late 19th century, Portland experienced rapid industrialization, becoming a major supplier of lumber and wheat to the rest of the country. The city’s economy further diversified in the early 20th century with the growth of the shipping industry and the establishment of several large corporations. Today, Portland is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, sustainable practices, and thriving tech industry. The city has a reputation for its progressive values, eco-friendly policies, and outdoor recreational opportunities, making it a popular destination for tourists and new residents alike.
