Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Phoenix, Arizona was founded in 1867 by Jack Swilling, a Confederate veteran of the Civil War. Swilling saw the potential for agriculture in the area due to the fertile land and access to water from the Salt River. The city’s name, Phoenix, was chosen to symbolize the idea of a new beginning rising from the ashes of the previous settlements in the area. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Phoenix rapidly grew as an agricultural hub, particularly for citrus fruit and cotton. The completion of the Roosevelt Dam in 1911 provided a reliable source of water and further fueled the city’s growth. During World War II, Phoenix became an important center for military training and aircraft production, further boosting its economy and population. The city continued to expand in the post-war years, becoming a major urban center in the Southwest. Today, Phoenix is known for its vibrant cultural scene, strong economy, and stunning desert landscape, making it a popular destination for tourists and new residents alike.
