Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Phoenix, Arizona, known as the Valley of the Sun, has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Originally inhabited by the Hohokam people, who constructed an extensive irrigation system using canals to support their agriculture, the area later became a part of the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. In the mid-1800s, after the Mexican-American War, Phoenix became a part of the United States and experienced a population boom with the discovery of gold and silver in the region. The city was officially incorporated in 1881 and quickly grew into a major agricultural center, producing citrus fruits, cotton, and cattle. In the early 20th century, Phoenix expanded rapidly, fueled by the construction of the Roosevelt Dam and the establishment of the military air base, Luke Field. Today, Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the United States and a major economic hub in the southwest, known for its thriving technology, healthcare, and tourism industries.
