Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Omaha, Nebraska was founded in 1854 as a trading post on the Missouri River by speculators from Council Bluffs, Iowa. The city quickly grew into a bustling transportation hub due to its strategic location along the river and proximity to the newly constructed transcontinental railroad. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Omaha became known as a center for the meatpacking industry, earning it the nickname “Gateway to the West.” The city’s economy boomed as meatpacking companies like The Union Stockyards and Omaha Packing Company flourished, attracting thousands of immigrants seeking job opportunities. Omaha also played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement, as it was the site of the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Today, Omaha is a vibrant city known for its cultural attractions, thriving arts scene, and strong economy driven by industries such as finance, healthcare, and technology.
