Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Odessa, Texas was founded in 1881 as a water stop along the Texas and Pacific Railway. Originally a small settlement of tents and shacks, the city quickly grew as prospectors flocked to the area in search of oil. The discovery of oil in the Permian Basin in the early 1920s transformed Odessa into a major oil hub and led to a population boom. Throughout the 20th century, Odessa continued to thrive as a center of oil production and distribution, and the city’s economy prospered. In the 1970s, Odessa became known for its high school football culture, which was famously portrayed in the book and film “Friday Night Lights.” Today, Odessa is a bustling city with a diverse economy that includes oil and gas, healthcare, and education. The city is home to the University of Texas Permian Basin and boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene. Odessa continues to grow and evolve, while still maintaining its rich oil heritage.
