Odessa, Texas was founded in 1881 as a water stop and cattle-shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway. The city was named after Odessa, Ukraine by Russian railroad investor and co-founder of the city, George B. Wilson. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Odessa experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to oil-rich fields in West Texas. The discovery of oil in the Permian Basin in the 1920s further fueled the city’s growth, attracting thousands of workers and businesses to the area. Odessa became a major center for oil production and transportation, earning the nickname “Pumpjack Capital of Texas.” Over the years, Odessa has faced economic ups and downs, from oil booms to busts, but has continued to thrive as a hub for energy, agriculture, and manufacturing industries. Today, Odessa is known for its vibrant culture, strong community spirit, and economic diversity.
