Ocala, Florida, located in Marion County, has a rich history dating back to the 16th century when Spanish explorers first arrived in the area. The city’s name is believed to have originated from the Timucua Native American word “Ocali,” meaning “big hammock.” In the 19th century, Ocala became a major hub for the burgeoning citrus industry and a popular destination for tourists seeking the healing powers of its natural springs. The city quickly grew in size and prosperity, attracting wealthy northerners who built grand Victorian homes and luxurious hotels. During the Civil War, Ocala served as an important supply depot for the Confederate Army, and after the war, it emerged as a vibrant center of commerce and industry. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ocala experienced a boom in the thoroughbred horse industry and became known as the “Horse Capital of the World.” Today, Ocala continues to thrive as a charming city known for its historic downtown district, equestrian events, and natural beauty.
