Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Newport News, Virginia has a rich history dating back to the early 1600s when English settlers arrived in the area. Originally inhabited by the Powhatan Native American tribes, the city was named after Captain Christopher Newport, who was a key figure in the establishment of the Jamestown settlement. Throughout the colonial era, Newport News was a strategic location for trade and shipping due to its deep-water harbor. During the Civil War, the city served as a major supply and transportation hub for the Confederate army. In the late 19th century, Newport News became known for its shipbuilding industry, with the establishment of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in 1886. The city’s economy boomed as it became a key player in naval construction. Today, Newport News is a vibrant city with a diverse population and a strong economy driven by shipbuilding, aerospace, and tourism. The city continues to thrive as a key center of commerce and industry in southeastern Virginia.
