Founded in 1638 by English Puritans led by John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton, New Haven, Connecticut has a rich history that spans over 380 years. Originally inhabited by the Quinnipiac Native American tribe, the area was first settled for its strategic location along the Quinnipiac River and Long Island Sound. As one of the original nine towns of the Connecticut Colony, New Haven quickly became an important center for trade and commerce. In the 19th century, New Haven’s economy grew rapidly with the expansion of manufacturing industries, particularly firearms, clocks, and hardware. The city also became known for its prestigious educational institutions, including Yale University, which was founded in 1701. It was a major hub for the abolitionist movement and played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
