Nags Head, North Carolina, is a coastal town situated on the Outer Banks. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Croatan and Roanoke people before European settlers arrived in the 16th century. The town’s name is said to have originated from the practice of pirates and thieves tying a lantern around the neck of a horse and walking it up and down the beach to lure ships into the shallow waters where they could be easily plundered. Nags Head became a popular vacation destination in the late 19th century, with wealthy families from the Northeast building grand beachfront homes along the shore. The town’s iconic sand dunes and pristine beaches attracted tourists looking to escape the heat of the southern summers. Today, Nags Head is known for its beautiful beaches, outdoor activities such as fishing and surfing, and a laid-back coastal lifestyle that continues to draw visitors from around the country.
