Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Mobile, Alabama was founded in 1702 by the French as the first capital of French Louisiana. Originally named “Fort Louis de la Mobile,” the city quickly became a thriving port and trading center due to its strategic location on the Gulf Coast. Throughout its history, Mobile has faced many challenges, including being briefly occupied by the British during the Seven Years’ War and the American Civil War. However, the city’s economy continued to grow, attracting industries such as shipbuilding, cotton production, and seafood processing. Mobile played a crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement, with notable events such as the 1963 Easter Boycott and the integration of public schools bringing about significant change in the city. Today, Mobile is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and bustling economic hub. The annual Mardi Gras celebration, held since 1703, is one of the oldest in the United States and continues to draw visitors from around the world. With a diverse population and strong sense of community, Mobile remains a dynamic and exciting city to visit and call home.
