Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, was officially settled by French missionaries and fur traders in the late 18th century. The city’s name is derived from the Algonquian word “millioke,” meaning “good/beautiful/pleasant land.” Milwaukee quickly grew into a bustling port city on the shores of Lake Michigan, attracting immigrants from Germany, Poland, Ireland, Italy, and other European countries. The city’s industrial economy boomed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with major industries like beer brewing, meatpacking, and tanneries driving growth and prosperity. Milwaukee faced challenges during the Great Depression, but rebounded during World War II with the demand for manufacturing. In the latter half of the 20th century, the city struggled with deindustrialization and urban decline, but revitalization efforts in the 21st century have transformed Milwaukee into a vibrant cultural and economic hub. Today, Milwaukee is known for its rich history, diverse population, breweries, art museums, and professional sports teams.
