Welcome to the Newto News for December of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Milwaukee, Wisconsin was founded in 1846 by Solomon Juneau, who named the settlement after the Algonquian word “Millioke,” meaning “beautiful land.” The city quickly grew due to its prime location on the shores of Lake Michigan, which made it a hub for shipping and trade. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Milwaukee became known for its breweries, earning it the nickname “Brew City.” The city’s beer industry thrived, with iconic breweries like Pabst, Schlitz, and Miller calling Milwaukee home. Milwaukee also played a significant role in the civil rights movement, with activists like Vel Phillips and Father James Groppi leading protests against segregation and discrimination. The city’s diverse population continues to be a source of pride, with a strong German, Polish, and Irish heritage still prevalent today. Today, Milwaukee is known for its vibrant arts scene, world-class museums, and bustling waterfront district. It has also become a popular destination for sports fans, with teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and the Milwaukee Brewers drawing crowds of enthusiastic supporters.
