Founded in 1819, Memphis, Tennessee, began as a small trading post along the Mississippi River. It quickly grew into a bustling city thanks to its strategic location for river trade and transportation. In the mid-19th century, Memphis became a major hub for the cotton industry, attracting wealthy plantation owners and businessmen. During the Civil War, Memphis was occupied by Union forces and served as a crucial supply base for the Union army. After the war, the city experienced a period of rapid growth and development, becoming known for its vibrant music scene and bustling riverfront. In the 20th century, Memphis became a center of the civil rights movement, with Martin Luther King Jr. delivering his famous “Mountaintop” speech at the Mason Temple in 1968. Today, Memphis is known for its rich cultural heritage, including landmarks such as Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, and Beale Street, a historic district renowned for its blues music and nightlife.
