Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Melbourne, Florida was founded in 1867 by former slaves from Georgia and Alabama who were seeking refuge and opportunity after the Civil War. The city was established as a small agricultural community, known for its fertile soil and abundant citrus groves. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Melbourne experienced a period of growth and development with the construction of the Florida East Coast Railway and the arrival of wealthy winter tourists from the North. During World War II, Melbourne became an important hub for the military with the establishment of Naval Air Station Melbourne, which trained Navy pilots for combat missions. After the war, the city continued to grow and expand, attracting new residents and industries. Today, Melbourne is a thriving coastal city known for its beautiful beaches, cultural attractions, and technological advancements. It is home to the Kennedy Space Center and a growing aerospace industry, making it a key player in the future of space exploration.
