Welcome to the Newto News for December of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Melbourne, Florida was founded in 1867 by former slaves, seeking to establish their own community after the Civil War. Originally known as “Crane Creek,” the city was later renamed Melbourne in honor of its first postmaster, Cornthwaite John Hector, who hailed from Melbourne, Australia. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Melbourne saw rapid growth as a hub for citrus farming and the burgeoning tourism industry. The Florida East Coast Railway extended its line to Melbourne, further fueling its development. During World War II, Melbourne played a significant role in the war effort, serving as a training hub for American aviators at the nearby Naval Air Station Melbourne. The city continued to expand and modernize in the postwar years, attracting new industries and residents. Today, Melbourne is a bustling city known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant arts scene, and strong community spirit. It remains a popular destination for tourists and a thriving center for technology, healthcare, and aerospace industries.
