Macon, Georgia has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1823. Originally named New Philadelphia, the city was renamed in honor of Nathaniel Macon, a North Carolina statesman and member of the United States Senate. Macon quickly became a bustling industrial and transportation hub, with the completion of the Georgia Railroad in 1843 and the Central of Georgia Railway in 1846. During the Civil War, Macon served as an important Confederate supply center and hospital site, seeing significant damage and loss of life during Union General William T. Sherman’s March to the Sea in 1864. The city began to rebuild in the post-war years, focusing on agriculture, manufacturing, and commerce. In the 20th century, Macon continued to grow and expand, becoming known for its music scene, particularly in the genres of soul, blues, and rock. Today, Macon is a thriving city with a diverse economy, vibrant culture, and a proud sense of its historic roots.
