Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Louisville, Kentucky was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark, a military leader and explorer. Originally named “Louisville” in honor of King Louis XVI of France, the city quickly grew into a major trading post due to its strategic location along the Ohio River. In the early 19th century, Louisville became known for its thriving shipping and manufacturing industries, particularly in tobacco, bourbon, and riverboats. During the Civil War, Louisville served as a key supply center for the Union Army, and the city’s population boomed as a result. In the years that followed, Louisville continued to prosper as a hub for river commerce and transportation. The construction of the Louisville and Portland Canal in the 1820s further solidified the city’s status as an important inland port. Today, Louisville is renowned for its horse racing industry, most notably the Kentucky Derby, which has been held annually at Churchill Downs since 1875. The city also boasts a vibrant arts and cultural scene, with attractions such as the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, the Muhammad Ali Center, and the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts.
