Los Angeles, California, also known as the “City of Angels,” has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the indigenous peoples who first inhabited the land. Before Spanish colonization in the late 18th century, the area was home to the Tongva and Chumash tribes who thrived off the fertile land and abundant resources. In 1781, the city was officially founded by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, who established El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels) near the present-day Olvera Street. Under Mexican rule in the early 19th century, the city grew rapidly as a center for agriculture and trade. After the Mexican-American War in 1847, Los Angeles became part of the United States and experienced a population boom during the California Gold Rush. The completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1876 further fueled the city’s growth, turning it into a major transportation hub. Throughout the 20th century, Los Angeles continued to expand and diversify, becoming a vibrant cultural and economic powerhouse. Today, it is known for its entertainment industry, beautiful beaches, and diverse population, making it one of the most iconic cities in the United States.
