Lexington, Kentucky, founded in 1775, has a rich history tied to both Native American and European settlers. The city was named after the town of Lexington, Massachusetts, to honor the first battle of the American Revolutionary War. During the 19th century, Lexington became known as the “Athens of the West” due to its thriving cultural and educational institutions. The city was home to Transylvania University, the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, as well as numerous historic horse farms and bourbon distilleries. Throughout the Civil War, Lexington was a strategic location for both Union and Confederate forces, leading to several skirmishes and battles in the area. After the war, the city experienced significant growth and industrialization, becoming a hub for tobacco, hemp, and later, the famous Kentucky bourbon industry. Today, Lexington is a vibrant city known for its historic charm, horse racing traditions, and thriving arts and culinary scenes.
