Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1882 by Abraham Munn and named after nearby lakes, Lakeland, Florida quickly grew as a hub for agriculture and transportation. The arrival of the South Florida Railroad in 1884 connected the city to the rest of the state, bringing in more settlers and businesses. Lakeland became known as a citrus industry powerhouse, with many orange groves and packing plants located in the area. The city also attracted winter visitors who came for its mild climate and beautiful lakes, leading to the development of hotels and tourist attractions. In the 20th century, Lakeland continued to grow and diversify its economy. The city became home to industries such as phosphate mining, manufacturing, and aviation. The establishment of Florida Southern College in 1885 and the construction of Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic “Child of the Sun” buildings in the 1940s added to Lakeland’s reputation as a cultural and educational center. Today, Lakeland remains a thriving city with a rich history and a vibrant community.
