Key West, Florida has a long and storied history dating back to the early 16th century when Spanish explorers first discovered the island. Originally inhabited by the Calusa Native American tribe, Key West was a strategic location for Spanish ships making their way to and from the Caribbean. In the 19th century, Key West saw a boom in development due to its thriving fishing and salvaging industries. The city also became a hub for Cuban cigar production and shipwreck salvage operations. During the Civil War, Key West remained under Union control and served as an important base for the blockade of Confederate ports. After the war, the city continued to flourish as a major center for the cigar industry. In the early 20th century, Key West became a popular destination for writers and artists, including Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams. Today, Key West is known for its vibrant culture, breathtaking sunsets, and laid-back atmosphere, making it a popular tourist destination.
