Key West, Florida has a rich and colorful history dating back to the early 16th century when Spanish explorers first arrived in the area. Originally inhabited by the Calusa Native American tribe, Key West became an important trading post for shipwreck survivors and salvagers in the 19th century due to its strategic location along the Florida Straits. During the mid-1800s, Key West prospered as a bustling port town and became known for its thriving cigar industry and famous Cuban immigrants. The city also played a significant role in the Civil War, acting as a base for Union blockade operations. In the early 20th century, Key West became a popular destination for artists, writers, and musicians, including Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams. The city also became a haven for rumrunners during Prohibition. Today, Key West is a vibrant city known for its lively nightlife, charming historic architecture, and beautiful beaches, attracting visitors from around the world.
