Key West, Florida, also known as the “Southernmost City in the United States,” has a rich and colorful history that dates back to the early 19th century. Originally inhabited by the Calusa Native American tribe, Key West was later discovered by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. In the early 1800s, the island became a popular destination for pirates and smugglers due to its strategic location between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Key West was also a thriving center for the wrecking industry, as ships would often run aground on the treacherous reefs surrounding the island. During the 19th century, Key West flourished as a bustling port city and was home to a diverse population of Cuban, Bahamian, and African American residents. The city’s economy boomed with the growth of the cigar industry and the establishment of naval bases during the Spanish-American War. Today, Key West is a popular tourist destination known for its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, and historic architecture. The city’s unique blend of cultures and laid-back atmosphere continues to attract visitors from around the world.
