Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Johnson City, Tennessee was founded in 1856 by Henry Johnson, a railroad official who saw the potential for a thriving community at the intersection of two major rail lines. The city quickly grew into a hub for the region’s timber, coal, and railroad industries. During the Civil War, Johnson City served as a strategic location for both Union and Confederate forces, with several skirmishes taking place in the area. After the war, the city experienced a boom in population and economic growth, thanks in part to the arrival of the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. By the late 19th century, Johnson City had become known for its bustling downtown area, diverse population, and strong sense of community. The city continued to prosper throughout the 20th century, with the establishment of healthcare and education institutions further solidifying its reputation as a cultural and economic center in the region. Today, Johnson City remains a vibrant city with a rich history and a bright future ahead.
