Houston, Texas was founded in 1836 by brothers Augustus and John Allen, who named the city after Sam Houston, the president of the Republic of Texas. Initially established as a trading post on the banks of Buffalo Bayou, Houston quickly grew into a bustling city thanks to its prime location as a major port of entry for goods and immigrants. Throughout the 19th century, Houston continued to prosper, becoming a center of economic activity and innovation in industries such as oil, shipping, and aerospace. The discovery of oil in Spindletop in 1901 further solidified Houston’s status as an economic powerhouse, leading to rapid population growth and development. Over the years, Houston has faced challenges such as hurricanes, economic downturns, and social unrest, but the city has always demonstrated resilience and a spirit of perseverance. Today, Houston is known for its diverse population, thriving arts and culture scene, and world-class medical and research institutions, cementing its reputation as a dynamic and vibrant city in the heart of Texas.
