Welcome to the Newto News for December of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Houston, Texas was founded in 1836 by brothers Augustus and John Allen. The city was strategically located near the banks of Buffalo Bayou, making it an ideal spot for commerce and trade. In 1837, Houston was named the capital of the Republic of Texas, a title it held until 1839 when the capital was moved to Austin. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Houston grew rapidly, fueled by the discovery of oil in the nearby Spindletop oil fields in 1901. This led to a boom in the city’s economy and population, as well as the development of industries such as shipping, manufacturing, and aerospace. Today, Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States and one of the most diverse, with a booming economy driven by energy, healthcare, and technology sectors. The city is also known for its vibrant culture, with a thriving arts scene, world-class museums, and a rich culinary landscape.
