Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Hickory, North Carolina was founded in the early 19th century as a small farming community in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Originally known as “Hickory Tavern” due to the hickory trees that surrounded the area, the town quickly grew into a bustling trading hub thanks to its convenient location on the Western North Carolina Railroad. By the late 19th century, Hickory had become a major center for furniture manufacturing, earning it the nickname “The Furniture Capital of the South.” The city thrived as furniture companies such as Hickory Chair Company and Bernhardt Furniture Company established themselves in the area, bringing jobs and prosperity to the community. In the 20th century, Hickory continued to grow and diversify its economy, attracting companies in industries such as textiles, technology, and healthcare. Today, Hickory is a vibrant city with a rich history, thriving arts and culture scene, and a strong sense of community pride.
