Welcome to the Newto News for December of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Hattiesburg, Mississippi was founded in 1882 by Captain William H. Hardy, a lumberman and civil engineer. Originally known as “Hardy’s”, the town quickly grew due to its strategic location as a stop on the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad. The city was officially incorporated in 1884 and was named after Hardy’s wife, Hattie. Hattiesburg became a hub for the lumber industry, with numerous sawmills and logging operations driving the local economy. The city also became a center for education, with the establishment of the Mississippi Normal College (now the University of Southern Mississippi) in 1912. Over the years, Hattiesburg has faced challenges such as the Great Depression and racial segregation, but has continued to grow and prosper. Today, the city is a vibrant community with a diverse population and a thriving arts and cultural scene.
