Welcome to the Newto News for December of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Harrisonburg, Virginia was founded in 1779 by Thomas Harrison, a Scottish immigrant who owned the land where the city now stands. Originally named Rocktown due to the abundance of large rocks in the area, the name was later changed to Harrisonburg in honor of its founder. The city quickly grew into a bustling community, serving as a hub for trade and commerce in the Shenandoah Valley. During the Civil War, Harrisonburg was a key strategic location, with both Union and Confederate forces vying for control of the region. The city suffered significant damage during the conflict, but was eventually rebuilt and continued to prosper in the post-war years. Today, Harrisonburg is known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and thriving agricultural community. The city is home to James Madison University, which has further fueled its growth and development. With a diverse population and a strong sense of community, Harrisonburg continues to thrive as a welcoming and dynamic city in the heart of Virginia.
