Gulfport, Mississippi was founded in 1898 as a port city along the Gulf Coast. Originally established as a lumber town, Gulfport quickly grew in importance as a hub for shipping and trade, due to its strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico. In the early 20th century, Gulfport experienced a boom in population and economic development, with the construction of the Gulfport Shipyard and the expansion of the city’s port facilities. The city became a key player in the seafood industry, as well as a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches and warm climate. Gulfport faced challenges during the Great Depression and World War II, but rebounded in the post-war years with the establishment of the Port of Gulfport, which further solidified its position as a major seaport on the Gulf Coast. Today, Gulfport continues to thrive as a diverse and vibrant city, known for its cultural attractions, outdoor activities, and strong sense of community.
