Welcome to the Newto News for April of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Greenville, North Carolina was founded in 1771 and named after Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene. The city quickly grew into a hub for agriculture and trade, with its location along the Tar River providing easy access to transportation routes. During the Civil War, Greenville served as a strategic location for both Union and Confederate forces, with several skirmishes taking place in the surrounding area. After the war, the city experienced a period of growth and industrialization, with the establishment of textile mills and tobacco factories. In the 20th century, Greenville became known for its thriving university community, with East Carolina University bringing in students from around the country. Today, the city is a vibrant center for education, healthcare, and technology, with a strong economy and a rich cultural heritage. Greenville continues to grow and evolve, while still honoring its past as a key player in North Carolina’s history.
