Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Gainesville, Florida was founded in 1853 and named after General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812. The city became a major transportation hub with the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s, leading to rapid growth and development. During the Civil War, Gainesville served as a Confederate stronghold and was targeted by Union forces multiple times. After the war, the city struggled to recover but eventually experienced a revitalization thanks to the establishment of the University of Florida in 1906. Throughout the 20th century, Gainesville continued to grow and evolve into a thriving community known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant arts scene, and diverse population. Today, Gainesville is home to a variety of historic landmarks, including the Thomas Center and the Florida Museum of Natural History, and is renowned for its natural beauty, with numerous parks, lakes, and trails for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy.
