Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Gainesville, Florida, was founded in 1854 and named after General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812. Originally established as a trading post and agricultural hub, the city quickly grew as a center of commerce and education. During the Civil War, Gainesville served as a key supply center for the Confederacy, but was later occupied by Union troops in 1864. The city’s economy suffered in the aftermath of the war, but began to rebound in the late 19th century with the arrival of the railroad and the establishment of the University of Florida in 1905. Throughout the 20th century, Gainesville continued to grow and develop, becoming known for its vibrant arts scene, diverse population, and strong ties to the natural environment. Today, Gainesville is a thriving city with a rich history, bustling downtown, and world-renowned educational institutions.
