Welcome to the Newto News for December of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Gainesville, Florida was founded in 1854 and named after General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the Seminole Wars. Initially a small agricultural town, Gainesville saw rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the arrival of the railroad and the establishment of the University of Florida in 1906. During the Civil War, Gainesville remained a relatively peaceful town, but suffered economic hardships as a result of the conflict. In the late 19th century, the discovery of phosphate and citrus farming brought new prosperity to the area. Gainesville became known for its diverse community and cultural attractions, including the annual Hoggetowne Medieval Faire and the internationally acclaimed Gainesville Chamber Orchestra. In recent decades, Gainesville has become known as a hub for innovation and technology, with the growth of tech startups and the establishment of the UF Innovation Hub. Today, Gainesville continues to grow and thrive as a vibrant city with a rich history and promising future.
